CEU's and ACET Program
RID's conferences have been growing at a rapid rate, much like the association and the profession as a whole. The Biennial National Conference grew from 475 in attendance in 1993 to almost 1,600 at the 2003 meeting,
A broad range of educational and social opportunities are provided at all RID conferences, whether they be national or local in scope. The success and growth of RID's Conferences continues. For example, at the 2003 Biennial National Conference, approximately 24 five-hour tracks were offered. Approximately 31 three-hour workshops were offered. Professional discussions totaled 9 and a total of 10 forums were conducted as well as 4 plenary sessions. The total of educational opportunities increased from approximately 25 in 1993 to more than 75 in 2003. As a result of the highly increased number of educational opportunities, conference participants had the opportunity to earn, with the pre-conference activities, well over 5.0 CEUs
with approx .55 CEU's during the "Mano a Mano"Conference
We look forward to seeing you at the next Conference!

CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE
RID’s Certification Maintenance Program was established in
July, 1994. Its main purpose is to “promote and monitor”
the ongoing skill development of all recognized certified interpreters.
To accomplish this, RID depends on approved sponsors to provide
and oversee appropriate educational activities. "Mano a Mano"is an
approved sponsor and processes both CEUs (Continuing Education Units)
and ACETs (Associate Continuing Education Tracking system).
There are two categories under which CEUs fall: Professional Studies
& General Studies. Over the course of a 4 year cycle, each certified
interpreter must complete 8 CEUs to maintain their certification;
six of these must be in the Professional Studies category.
You can earn CEUs in the following ways:
• Sponsor Initiated Activities
• Participant-Initiated Non-RID Activities
• Academic Coursework
• Independent Study Activities
For further information on procedures and materials needed to start
processing your CEUs, follow the links below:
Sponsor Initiated Activities
Earning CEUs at a Sponsor Initiated Activity is easy. There are
3 simple steps:
• attend the event
• BRING OR KNOW YOUR RID MEMBER NUMBER
• complete the paperwork at the close of the event
Participant Initiated Non-RID Activities (PINRA)
A PINRA is any structured activity that is not RID sponsored, and
is not a college course for which you are earning credit. This leaves
the field wide open, and, like an Independent Study, allows you
to choose from areas of study that specifically address your individual
interests.
Examples of PINRAs are:
• In-service workshops
• Community classes
• Conferences
• Audited college courses
• Non-credit college classes
NOTE: PINRAs must be approved PRIOR to the activity. PINRA paperwork
cannot be completed after the activity has taken place. Contact
us at least 3 weeks prior to the scheduled activity.
What we need from you BEFORE the activity:
1. A copy of the workshop, conference or course agenda, or other
documentation that identifies content and hours
2. A PINRA form, filled out and SIGNED
3. Processing fee: $10.00 per activity (payable to Mano a Mano)
4. Proof of registration
AFTER the activity:
1. A document verifying your attendance, i.e. a letter from the
registrar, workshop leader or college instructor.
Academic Coursework
Paperwork for academic courses taken and completed within your CEU
cycle, may be completed within that cycle. We will need the following
from you in order to process your paperwork:
1. The RID Academic Coursework form completed and signed (for each
course). We will send the form upon request.
2. Proof of your college’s accreditation – this can
be copied from the college catalog (usually a sentence or two printed
in the front of the catalog)
3. Course description, including number of college units to be earned
4. Processing fee: $10.00 for each course/activity processed (payable
to Mano a Mano)
5. At the completion of the course, a copy of your college transcript
or a copy of your grade sheet showing a “C” or above
if taking for a grade, OR showing “credit” if taking
the course credit/no credit.
When calculating the number of earnable CEUs for a college course,
remember:
? 1 semester unit = 1.5 CEUs
? 1 quarter unit = 1 CEU
Independent Study Activities
"Mano a Mano"does not process Independent Study Activities (IS) at
this time. RID, Inc maintains a complete listing of sponsors approved
to handle IS on the RID web site at www.rid.org. Interpreters who
wish to earn IS CEUs can contact any of these sponsors regardless
of their geographical location.
Although "Mano a Mano"does not process Independent Study
Activities at this time, we are happy to assist you with your Academic
Coursework and Participant Initiated Activities. "Mano a Mano"provides
Sponsor Initiated Activities throughout the year, including Mano a Mano’s
Annual Conference which is held in the August 3, 2007 in San Francisco.
